What is Massage Therapy?

Massage Therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues of fthe body for the purpose of rehabilitating and normalizing those tissues that allow for pain free movements. Although many seek treatment to receive some relaxation, there are many other ways that massage therapy can help the human body. Generally, massage therapy is used to help with the circulation of blood and lymph, reduce muscular tension and flaccidity, sedate or stimulate the nervous system, and amplify the effects of tissue healing.
Muscles of the body are prone to becoming tight and shortened or lengthened and weak due to, well, life. Muscles can tighten due to prolonged inactivity, during exercise, and after exercise. Not only can they be frustrating and painful to deal with, they can have long lasting effects on the body that may include; poor blood circulation, nerve impingement, postural misalignment, and headaches.
As stated above, a lot of people seek out massage for the relaxation aspect of it because that is exactly what massage is supposed to do for you physically and mentally. It can help reduce mental stress, improve mental concentration, and promote restful sleep.
Massage therapy can come in the form of many different types of modalities. Some of the modalities include applying fixed or movable pressure, holding, vibration, rocking, friction, kneading and compression. Which techniques the therapist will decide to utilize from these different modalities depends on the nature of injury, the client, and the practitioner themselves. Regardless of the modality being used, the intent of the treatment should always be the same: to help reduce pain, encourage pain-free range of motion, and promote a healthy lifestyle.
